Большинство алгоритмов сжатия базируется на том или ином методе кодирования. Аудио- и видеоданные кодируются (сжимаются) для обеспечения эффективности хранения и/или передачи и декодируются для доступа и воспроизведения. Кодирование цифровых данных призвано предотвращать их потери в процессе передачи по линиям (каналам) связи - для этого разработано множество методов, например с самосинхронизацией, с исправлением ошибок и др.There are solutions today that do encoding and decoding of hardware. формат Dolby Digitalсистема кодирования звуковых файлов, разработанная компанией Dolby Laboratories и принятая в качестве международного стандарта. Наиболее распространённый способ кодирования аудио для DVD-Video и обязательная система сжатия аудиоданных для NTSC-дисков (525/60). Предшественниками Dolby Digital были Dolby Surround (три канала, два для передних колонок и один для задней, полоса пропускания от 100 Гц до 7 кГц) и Dolby Pro Logic (расширение Dolby Surround, четыре канала, в том числе один центральный и два подканала для задней акустической подсистемы). Версия Dolby Digital 5.1 (прежнее название - формат AC-3) имеет 6 каналов (два передних, два задних, один центральный и один для сабвуфера), полоса пропускания от 20 Гц до 20 кГц. Расширенная версия Dolby Digital 5.1 - Dolby Digital ЕХ, предусматривает дополнительную "окружающую" колонку или две задние. Однако Dolby Digital ЕХ нельзя считать "истинной" системой 6.1 или 7.1, поскольку дополнительный "окружающий" канал формируется матричным кодированием (matrix encoding) обычных каналов 5.1.
